Mrs. Doris Jean Mitchell

Mrs. Doris Jean Keel Mitchell, 90, of 133 Nelson Road, Grant, AL, passed away Wednesday night, October 27th, at her home surrounded by her family. She was a long-time member of the Simpson Point Church of Christ. Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Kate Duncan Smith DAR High School then went on to study at Snead Jr. College and Jacksonville State College. She received her Bachelors of Science in Health and Physical Education and Social Studies. Mrs. Mitchell pursued her graduate work in Social Studies at George Peabody and Alabama A&M University. Mrs. Mitchell taught in the Talladega County School System for 2 years, the Cullman County School System for 5 years, and 3 years part-time at Northeast State Jr. College. The remainder of her career was at spent at New Hope High School where she taught for 24 years until her retirement in 1985. Mrs. Mitchell became a member of the Alabama Education Association in 1952 and served as a retired delegate from 1989 – 1994. She became a member of the Alabama Retired Teachers Association in 1985. She attended dozens of District and State workshops and served as the Vice-Chair of the State Constitution and Future Planning Committee. Mrs. Mitchell became a member of the Huntsville / Madison County Retired Teachers Association in 1985. She served as the Membership Chairperson, Community Services Chairperson, Telephone Committee, Constitution Committee, and Historian. In 2001 Mrs. Mitchell became a member of the Heroes of Kings Mountain DAR Chapter. She then became a founding member of the Gunter Mountain Chapter where she served as Founding Vice Region. Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by Mr. Jack Mitchell, her husband of 46 years. Also, by her parents, Cecil Keel and Velma McDonald Keel, and brothers J.C. Keel, C.W. Keel, and Charles Keel. She is survived by 2 daughters, Beverly (Gay) Harrison of Knoxville, TN, Sherry (Jim) Knight of Diana, TN, and son, Greg (Tammy) Mitchell of Fayetteville, TN. Mrs. Mitchell had 11 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Jack and Jean Mitchell Scholarship Fund at New Hope High School, New Hope, AL.
